Just like porn, we know it when we see it.

The general problem is trying to pin down a definitive defintion. This is diificult but the article's gist is this lack of concreteness shouldn't preclude using it.

And to prove the diffiuclty, and in a way only an elite Left newspaper can, it includes Abu Ghraib right next to beheadings.

This is by far, the weakest part of the article, and the article would have been better served if the editors had exercised the opportunity to use their red pen and struck the sentence from the piece.
